Tebogo Mashifana is an accomplished individual who wears many hats gracefully and determinedly. As the Head of the Department, Associate Professor, and dedicated Researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Johannesburg, she is a driving force in academia.
Passionate about Science Communication and empowerment, she actively engages in initiatives to disseminate knowledge in STEMI. She is committed to inspiring the youth, especially young women, to pursue careers in STEMI fields. Through her non-profit organization, Dr Tebogo Mashifana&Partners Foundation, she conducts career guidance and mentorship programmes, to spark a passion for these disciplines among high school learners and university students. In her TEDx talk titled “Waste to Wealth,” delivered in 2022, she eloquently conveyed the importance of everyone’s contribution to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, leaving a lasting impact on her audience. Her expertise as a sought-after speaker on various topics further strengthens her role as a Science Communication advocate, a leader, and a role model. Going beyond the classroom, she collaborates with industry stakeholders, facilitating student visits and inviting experts to bridge the gap between theory and practice, producing competent engineers ready to make a difference.
Prof Mashifana’s impact reaches beyond South Africa’s borders through her fruitful collaborations with international scholars. Her passion for knowledge transfer is evident in her publication record, featuring over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. Recognized for her research, she has been awarded the prestigious National Research Foundation (NRF) grants and the NRF Award for Research Excellence for Early/Emerging Researchers. Her dedication to making a positive impact in South Africa and the globe has earned her invitations to various platforms as a speaker and discussion leader on issues close to the nation’s heart. Her remarkable achievements have been acknowledged through numerous accolades, including the UJ Vice-Chancellor’s distinguished award and the Dean’s Award for the top achieving staff member, Mail&Guardian 200 Young South Africans, 50 inspiring South African, a finalist for TransUnion Rising Star, and JCI South Africa Ten Outstanding Young Person.
